Pupil barristers
The third and final stage to joining the Bar is the work-based component, or pupillage.
This is divided into:
- your non-practising period (known as a 'first six')
- your practising period (known as a 'second six')
Pupillage can be a challenging time

The minimum funding award for pupillage is currently:
- £23,078 for 12-month pupillages in London
- £21,060 per annum for pupillages outside London
In January 2025, the minimum funding award for pupillage will be:
- £24,203 for 12-month pupillages in London
- £22,019 per annum for pupillages outside London
